The Helen Casey Memorial Butterfly Garden
The Helen Casey Memorial Butterfly Garden is located at the corner of Sterling Boulevard and Staunton Ave. What began as an Eagle Scout project in 2017 soon blossomed when the Sterling Foundation partnered with their efforts, bringing its network of experts, community leaders, and volunteers. The Foundation was able to help connect multiple Boy and Girl Scout Troops, a Serve Camp, and numerous community volunteers to bring this garden to life. The garden was dedicated to Helen Casey in recognition of her extraordinary volunteer work, love for Sterling, and passion for open green spaces.
The garden features a number of plants specifically chosen to attract butterflies, and hopefully the community too! We firmly believe that when nature is protected, nourished, and beautified, it gathers all of us together and further enriches our community.

Unfortunately, in the fall of 2018, the plants were removed when the local gas company needed to make underground repairs.
In Summer of 2020, Duarte Design created a plan involving a new footprint for the garden with all native plants. This would reduce the amount of maintenance needed. Through fundraising efforts, Sterling neighbors helped purchase 400 native plants and 50 neighbors helped plant a brand new garden in September 2020.

Sterling Girl Scout Troop 2274 collected thousands of plastic bottle caps to create a 3 panel mural of the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. It was officially installed in October 2022, making the garden a cheery place for all.
